What a modelling agency actually does

Article image

From the outside an agency looks like a directory with a phone number. Most of the work happens in places neither the client nor the model sees, so here is what is actually going on.

Before anyone is on the website

We meet every model in person. We check identity and the right to work, take our own digitals rather than relying on their photographs, and go through what the work involves and what it does not. Then they sign an agreement that sets out what we may publish about them and what we may not.

Only then does a profile go live. On this site a profile physically cannot be published until that confirmation is on record — the dashboard refuses to do it. That is deliberate. The usual failure mode for a directory is one unchecked profile slipping through, and a rule that depends on someone remembering is not a rule.

When an enquiry arrives

Someone reads it. If the names you picked do not fit the brief we say so and suggest people who do, which is often the most useful thing we do all week. Then we check real availability, work out a fee from the hours and the usage rights, and send a written quote.

We also screen enquiries. Bookings here are for professional shoots, campaigns and events only. A request for anything else is refused and not passed on, and we block the sender. Models on our books do not have to filter that themselves — which is a large part of why they are on an agency’s books rather than freelancing.

The contract

Every booking is contracted before it happens: date, hours, fee, usage rights, exclusivity, cancellation, overtime, and who is responsible for safety on the day. It protects both sides, and it is the reason a disagreement after a shoot is usually a five-minute conversation rather than a legal problem.

The unglamorous part

Chasing payment. Keeping a diary for dozens of people. Rebooking a shoot when a model is ill. Telling a client their first choice is not available for the fourth time. Being the person a model calls at nine at night when a set is not what was agreed, and the person who then calls the client.

That last one is the job. The commission pays for someone to be accountable when something goes wrong, which is the one thing a direct booking cannot give either side.

What we charge for it

An agency fee on top of the model’s fee, shown separately on every quote. We do not take a cut we have not disclosed, and we do not charge models to be on our books. Any agency that asks a model for a joining fee, a portfolio fee or a website fee is running a different business from this one.
